There are a host of apps out there for traveling this great wide world, here are five that we have found invaluable so far:
Simple app that lets you download maps specific to a country or region to be used offline, running off your GPS, meaning you don’t need wifi or data to find where you are. Includes the “nearby” feature to pin point restaurants, entertainment and much more, including our favourite - public transport stops and stations. Free & paid versions available.
Hostel App on the go. We hostels is an app-only hostel booking system. Easy to search and book “here and now”, as well as booking in advance. Great pictures of each hostel, maps and directions, information customised by the hostel, real-time booking. Data/wifi connection required. Free App (with advertising).
3. Weather Underground - Free
Location based global weather app: instant up to date information for your current location including forecasts and radar. Data/wifi connection required. Free app (with advertising).
4. Day One Journal/Diary – $4.99
Documenting your journey has never been easier with great features such as daily reminders, automatic location, weather and time recording, and photo integration. Journal anytime and Day One will sync when reconnected to data / wifi. Also syncs to your other Apple devices using iCloud or Dropbox and has a great PDF export feature. Paid: $4.99.
Triposo is an offline travel guide that downloads country guides and information from a variety of open sources such as WikiTravel and OpenStreetMap (to name a few). Triposo has a phrase book, nearby suggestions, currency conversions based on your location and a great offline maps to boot. It allows its users to check in and share their own tips and will only improve with a wider user base. Free.
